Coastal South - August 2015

A bountiful August with all of the expected migrants plus a #fullfatpatchtick Black Tern allowed Andy Rhodes at Calshot to overtake Paul Freestone at Gwithian and claim first place on the Coastal South Comparative Minileague table with 114%. Paul held on to top spot for several months but with autumn underway it looks like it's time for some ructions in the rankings!

Amy Robjohns passes the 100% mark and into third place with Wood Sandpipers and Black Terns at Titchfield Haven. Just after just ticking Wood Sand that month, Amy went on to find her own flock of five on the patch! That's how it is done folks.

Peter Hazelwood gets a shout out for some excellent BirdTrack effort at Oldbury Power Station, over 8200 records and nearly 180 complete lists submitted by the end of August! Peter sits in fourth place on the comparative table and within sight of 100%.

At the top of points table it is Kev Rylands who makes the biggest splash, moving from sixth to third after a fine month at Dawlish Warren where some of his highlights included Sooty Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater, Nightjar and Osprey as well as the first Coal Tit in three years and a record Devon count of 2484 Common Terns.

Joe Stockwell remains in first place at Ferrybridge to Weymouth where a Kentish Plover and a self-found Wryneck were his best birds, the former a real south coast specialty these days. Wrynecks also graced Ilya Maclean's Loe Pool patch as well as North Selsey for Ian Pitts.

Another flock of Wood Sands dropped in to a coastal south patch, this time four birds at Severn Beach for Paul Bowerman and it certainly has been the year for Black Stork, Sean Foote getting in on the action with one over North Portland.

Not a rarity but equally as welcome for Andy Johnson was a Treecreeper at Sandy Point which was only the second for his patch along with his third record of Little Ringed Plover.
